Shuttered Stars.I saw him lying taut by the garden,
his rigid spine straining against
skin and his shuttered eyes kissing
the astroturf.
The children said he was sleeping,
and they sat next to him with
weeds snaking around their
bruised throats.
It rained. There were no stars
in the night. The flowers did
not grow. The weeds did not stop.
The children did not cry.
I left to shutter my windows, and
