Please fave and comment on this journal if you will be supporting the Day of Silence tomorrow, April 20, 2012

Hello Everyone,

I along with thousands of other students will spend tomorrow silent in support of LGBTQ students in demonstration against the "...silencing effect of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment in schools."

I invite everyone to stand with me on this.
The Day of Silence's purpose is to bring attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment and effective responses. The goal of the Day of Silence is to make schools safer for all students, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression. In a Harris Interactive study on bullying, students said two of the top three reasons students are harassed in school are actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender expression. Additionally, nearly 9 out of 10 LGBT students experience harassment at school. Students across the country participate in the Day of Silence to bring attention to this problem, let students who experience such bullying know that they are not alone and ask schools to take action to address the problem.
- DayOfSilence

Please support this, take note of it tomorrow, and consider being silent in any way you can.

Hundreds of thousands of students of all beliefs, backgrounds and sexual orientations participate in the Day of Silence

You DO NOT have to have a certain sexual preference to participate. Anyone may. Like me, I am straight, but support this just as much as anyone else.

Make this part of your day: Set this as your avatar for the day like I did!

Just talking about own experience. I believe the problem is in the intelligence of people surrounding "socially weak" person (for example - a person with just any unusual streak which can result in being bullied). The mobs will find themselves a victim in just anyone who doesn't behave as insolent and rude as they do. Tolerance is not only about behaving with LGBT normally, but about accepting people for their personalities.

I've knonw a few (4-5) LGBT people, and they were taken in society in a normal way. And I was bullied just anywhere because of my weird hairstyle and old clothes, lol. Why so?because they were strong and self-confident personalities, and I was nervous, asocial and with strange behaving.)) The only strong reaction on a not-straingt person was surprise. Also, girls which were actually playing lesbians to get attention (an ugly matter!) recieved a bit of vulgar jokes (but seemed to enjoy that) - and that was all. And it's in a country which is believed to have low tolerance.

So, I believe the reason is in low education of bullies (I've seen only "mobs" doing that) and on other hand there may count a timid or shy or smth personality of a bullied one. If the bullied wasn't LGBT but was fat, or red-haired, or smth, he would also get that kind of problem. It's just that deep: society looks on yer outfit, not on yer insidings.

I did not become silent today because I needed to speak, but I participated by wearing red to school. Bullying is wrong on many levels, and we must realize that name calling and other verbal abuse towards someone really hurts. When I was younger, I didn't realize that and now I regret it.

I don't get it. Silent is silent, and I am assuming no communication. That would have a bigger impact than being able to communicate in other ways, like chat rooms, sign language, texting, etc. Bullying can happen in more forms than just voice and bullying can happen in any of those communication methods that I have names, plus some. So if you (all of you) REALLY want to go with this this Day of Silence, you wouldn't be on here.

No, I am not going with it. I have children so I need to speak. And I am not a bully, I support the LGBT with all my heart. But they aren't the only ones bullied either. I support ending ALL bullying, though my support is stretched thin. Bullying will never stop completely but at least we can say we tried.

I don't need to be silent, neither do you, but you do need to support your beliefs. Instead of silence, try a kind word to everyone you see... That often goes a longer way that silence.

Not participating is perfectly fine and does not elude to you not supporting LGBT.

The point of this is to show solidarity for the victims of bullying. Not necessarily to get back at the bullies nor to put a stop to it.

These victims are often lead to suicide by their bully. They are silent.

Awesome. I'm planning to participate. My English teacher was talking about this in class the other day, and she was saying that it can also make people notice all the other things that we can't talk about but should be able to, such as learning disabilities and family issues. When terrible things happen to people, society puts this pressure on them to just get over it, and if they talk about it then all those emotions can be brought back, making them look "weak."
