Most deviants on dA who follow the news section of dA know that recently there have been an increase in "Rant News".

Rant News: I describe as news that really is inciting riots and anger rather than finding a solution.

Rant news has basically taken over with anger from deviants about the 1,000 image search limit, about the help desk being too slow or and even I have seen some anger directed about Premiums, and other such aspects of dA.

Now, I am not going to go in and fight all of these topics because I won't win. Those that want to fight the system and complain about it will continue to do so, there is no stopping them.


For example... When deviantART V7 came out, the news article had 4700+ devious rejections. Along with posts like this one that I have quoted:

"I HATE THIS VERSION AND WHEN I SAY I HATE IT I MEAN IT ><I HAVE TO REFRESH THE PAGE 100 TIMES TO SEE THE DEVIATION AND IT'S HORRIBLE. I TRY TO SEE THE SAME DEVIATION 1 WEEK AGO AND HAD BEEN TRYING TO SEE IT EVERYDAY AND IT NOT WORK'S. I F****** HATE THIS VERSION I F********** HATE IT ><"

From there, a petition to bring back V6 was started.

This continued until deviantART had time to fix all of the issues. It was a brand new release, OF COURSE IT HAD ISSUES!

But, Look what happened... Over 4700 deviants hated dA V7, as time went along they got used to it. dedicated deviants submitted suggestions to the Suggestions Forum the +help desk, and made more and more suggestions of things to correct.

You know what happened? deviantART fixed them!
Then improved them.

deviantART Listened...

dA has some of the most amazing customer support. The fact that the day V7 was released, the chart at #dt showed syncs more than once every hour of the day. That fact alone is amazing. There are very few companies (let alone with 15-16 MILLION users) that can claim the same.

Now back to news,

In all honesty, posting a news article that condemns deviantART for something they have done will not fix it. The correct way to go about this is as follows:

I asked `sine-out and $dxd for what they would suggest to a deviant, and I wanted to share that now.

"Actually make a suggestion, via the suggestion forum, and, if you want to complain, be civil about it.
Going on a hate fest in the news section is all fine and good, it's entertaining, but, it doesn't actually do anything except annoy those you want help from. Also, make sure to look up and fully research what your problem is before you actually post. B"

Instead of doing something to anger staff and other deviants, why not find a solution.

Right now, posting a news article is dropping a bomb.
Right now, posting in the suggestions forum, or filling out a help desk ticket is making an Alliance and Trade agreement.
Which do you think is better?

Hey Deviants!

I have thought about this a lot lately, and maybe because this time of year is all about friends and family, so I thought I would publish this article...

Online Communities these days are extremely popular. Look at deviantART... 16 Million deviants and growing every minute! But why? Communities online allow for a second chance. When you walk into a forum or chat room with a screen name no one knows anything about you...

Your age
Gender
Race
Religion
Size/Weight
Looks

And every other characteristic that people are otherwise judged on in the 'real world'.

The fact that people have the choice to tell people about these characteristics or not, and that people really don't mind... On dA, it is likely that I have friends from ages 13-100... There are deviants who are 15, 20, 25, 30, 60, and so on... The fact that on a daily basis you can be friends and chat with all of these people is amazing.

Why it's Amazing...

Whether or not you want to admit it, everyone judges people from the second they see them walking down a hallway in the mall, at a friends house, in a grocery store... Racial profiling is an extreme example of this that has recently popped up with a lot of Police Men in the US. But on a website, all you have is that Screen name...

So when you make friends on a website it isn't because of popularity, looks, age, gender etc. It's personalities... It's how you act and talk with people.

If I had to guess, I would say that I watch people from nearly every continent, and most countries... That's simply Amazing!

Where else can you go and say "Fred lives in the US, but his best friend lives in Argentina!" It just is incredible.

The Fact is... That if this continues on this trend, people will eventually eliminate Racism, Sexism, Ageism, etc. And potentially even war...

Bet you never thought about that...

Where am I going with this? I am honestly not sure. I would love all of your opinions on this subject... Do you think that a future generation that meets people without knowing anything about them could eliminate racism, sexism and other such things? Could it even eliminate war?

Welcome to the second edition of GMArt!

GMArt is a new interview series that interviews only current GM's. As each GM has his and her own ideas, standards etc. it's nice to learn from them!

This article also tries to look at more than a normal interview does.

This series is not on a set schedule, although you can expect about 1 or 2 a week. They will be posted when GM's actually write back

`Timothy-Sim

I met Timothy a few months ago, he has featured some amazing DD's if you haven't seen them yet, you ahve to take a look! He is the GM for Photojournalism.

How did you volunteer to become a GM? What was the experience like?

I am deeply in love with photojournalism. I remember coming into dA and seeing how `evanhwong worked with `Helewidis manning the gallery. Even as I began to improve on my own works as I drew inspiration from the gallery and in turn began to contribute with my own works and inputs, I wanted to take it to the next step to be an example and help to push through what Evan had started for the gallery.

When I applied and got the post, it was a moment of exhilaration, but when you begin to let it settle in, you realise that you have a huge weight of responsibility on your shoulder that you have to bear to keep the community afloat. One has to know who to look for in the community and who is the right people to reach out to. It's been a good 5-6months since I've taken the post and I'm moving on to building more exciting phases that will get the community to interact better and share their PJ works.


When you found out you had been chosen to be a GM, what did you immediately want to do?

I immediately wanted to hold a contest and make it a really big event.

Have you been able to do that?

Well, it hasn't happened yet, I originally wanted to hold it alongside !kyle28 who was then the Street GM. I'd also pulled a few big names in the gallery to judge, but being good with what they do, it can be hard to contact each other on dA and keep the flow there.

What I can say for sure though, is that by the end of my first year here as a GM, that contest will happen

When you give a DD to someone, what are the factors you consider?

I factor in Newsworthiness first of all. It has to tell a story. If it's just some picture randomly taken and is kinda artsy but doesn't hold water, it throw it out immediately. Photojournalism is about reportage and as much as there can be creativity in it, there has to be a drawing factor of newswortiness.

I also strongly urge anyone who does photojournalism not to over-process their works with photoshop. Even toying with the shadows and highlights is overdoing it. My guideline? If it's just pulling in the contrasts and pulling a little curve to keep the image from being too warm or cool, that's as far as i'll allow it. Anything else, the moment I see that it's gone too far, I'll just reject it.

Oh, I also take suggestions, but they have to be genuine. I can tell the ones who really love the pictures they suggest and want the world to see them because they want to share them, and I can tell them from the ones who just suggest hundreds of pictures every five minutes just because they want their one moment of glory on the 'Suggested by' tag below the DD.

What artist in your Gallery Section do you look up to?

`evanhwong has always been the mentor to me. Giving great advice and once in a while kicking serious ass when I make a poor decision in real. Evan's been a great source of help in my career, since I can attribute my recent job post in Reuters to his butt kicking lecture to me.

`contains-mild-peril is one of my biggest favourite photojournalists, keeping things real and making pictures that I wish I was there to have covered as well. He's one of my role-models that I want to be when I get the chance.

`straightfromcamera a good guy who has been another wonderful source of inspiration that keeps me on edge when i make photos. My favourite picture of all dA belongs to a picture in his gallery. Can you guess which one it is?

`tanya-n is also another one I very much respect. She's been deep in India profiling and documenting life there and seeing the pictures that come from there, some quirky and some heartfelt, I can only have deep admiration for her.

When you were a child, was art part of your life?

I never enjoyed art. My parents would sign me up for art classes where I'd have to draw something and I swear my drawing is abysmal. I couldn't even draw a stick man proper. I suspect I still can't. I'm terrible with a pen and pencil.

Tell us a story of something that happened in your life!

Well, stone me for being religious, but I'm proud to say Jesus is my drug. I'm not just a photojournalist keeping things real, but I'm a God-fearing Christian who's also the head of my youth's media ministry. Every step of my way in my life, that happened, I have every right to be grateful and thankful for the open doors that have been presented to me, and the people who have been placed around me to guide me to them.

What is your favorite type of art (Either to make or to look at?)

Being a photographer, the favourite type of art I'd love to make and look at would be pictures. A picture does speak a lot for itself. I particularly enjoy looking at pictures from all over the world in [link]

What would you want to tell the next GM of your gallery?

Stay fiesty, the community bites.

Does Music, Life etc. change the art you create?

Yes it does. Music can determine my mood and life in itself can determine who and how I document. Take my grandfather's life and death for example. It was something that changed the way I saw life and how to took pictures. It changed the way I documented things. I will never be the same again because of it.

What's your favorite joke?

I don't have one right now actually. I'm more of an on the spot improvisation kinda guy. And I laugh at anything that's really good.

What would you want to tell deviants who submit to your gallery?

Know what you're submitting. Don't do it because you think it fits or because the genre looks cool. Know your place and if you want to have the passion to really document life with a story. Do it with conviction!

What do you enjoy and dislike about being a GM?

I enjoy working with other GMs and supporting each other when we have problems or drama. The DD process is also definitely something I admit is enjoyable. It brings pride to my heart when I see a poorly received work shine through for what its worth when it gets recognition as a DD.

I particularly hate facades people put on when they suggest works as DDs and I hate the fact that there are some people who complain the world over when they feel their works deserve to be in the gallery when it doesn't and it gets shifted to its rightful place. All part of the drama in dA.

Hello Deviants!

So, many of you may have seen the DD today from `ginkgografix's dA Related DDs.



I was the one who suggested it, and have already seen comments that say "I don't like how this is a Daily Deviation". I wanted to take a minute and actually explain why I suggested it, and why this relates to everyone.

One of the great things about deviantART is that the site doesn't limit you to just art... There are Groups, Chat Rooms, Forums, Journals, and more that create a second part of deviantART... Community.

Many deviants, myself included, enjoy both the community and the art... Together they make up what deviantART truly is.

When another deviant says "I don't like how this is a Daily Deviation" to the piece suggested above, I want to point out something.

If deviants are allowed to grow, and critique each others art, why can't deviants do the same for community?

The dARelated Gallery is very focused on community. deviantART suggestions are suggestions to improve the community as well as the site.

This is the same as in any other "Art" gallery, and should be able to get the same recognition.

Many artists even pride them selves on art in the form of community, from Custom User boxes, to Tutorials, and even stamps!

So next time you see a DD, feature, or even just a deviation sitting out there, don't push it away because it is related to the community... You wouldn't want the same done to the Art side of deviantART.

This DD that was given today I suggested with the hope that it could improve the community.

Groups are a great feature, every now and then there are more features added to them to improve them... I saw this deviation as a great idea! One that hadn't been done before but could be so useful in groups such as #stamp-kingdom that require applications to the groups.

Granted, this is just the start of this feature... It could continue to grow, require links, require thumbs, require a keyword so that it is clear that you read the rules... It's endless, but ~Sostopher started the idea, and deserves just as much recognition as anyone...

So a little bit over 3 hours ago, I sat down and watched Harry Potter.

My overall thoughts: 7.5/10
Cinematography: 9/10
Music: 7/10
Storyline: 8/10
Storyline kept to book: 7/10

Overall it was great!

I would not advise seeing it UNLESS YOU HAVE READ THE BOOK!

There are many small explanatory scenes taken out. For example; During the water scene in the woods, we really don't find out why it is that Ron has to destroy the horcrux...
etc...

Where it ends: It ends right after Voldemort finds Dumbledore's Grave and gets the elder wand letting out a huge bolt of lightning.

Overall, I would highly suggest seeing this movie! Well worth the extra money to see it on a big screen!

This article also tries to look at more than a normal interview is about.

I have personally gotten a chance to talk with `Anoya and she is an amazing GM! Her featured pieces are amazing and breath taking and a lot of the time APN shots that haven't been seen before!

How did you volunteer to become a GM? What was the experience like?
I probably volunteered like most of the other GM's; sending an e-mail when I saw an open position of the gallery that I love most. I didn't expect at all to get a reply though, but I've spend a lot of time writing my e-mail and I guess that worked! I took it really serious and wrote a similar application as I would've written if I would've applied for a full-time job, telling about myself, about the gallery, about my experience with dA, what I would do if I were a GM, etc.

When you found out you had been chosen to be a GM, what did you immediately want to do?
I wanted to yell from a rooftop, I was so dAmn excited, haha. But I couldn't tell anyone yet. When I got the hat it was even more exciting since it was the best birthday present ever so far!

Have you been able to do that?
I'm not really a yelling person, so I haven't done that. But the second I was allowed to tell everyone; I did!

When you give a DD to someone, what are the factors you consider?
Tough question, since I could say I only pay attention to the '3 month rule', that the artist shouldn't have received a DD in the last three months, but that wouldn't be true. I look at the overall picture, the quality, the subject (I'm an APN GM, not a Waterscapes GM for example). I try to divide the DD's among the subcategories, but that's pretty tough since most suggestions are waterscapes. Don't get me wrong, I love them, but I've been reading quite some complaints before that people were seeing too many waterscapes. Then again; they're also the most suggested category so every now and then you might see a bit more of those.
I also consider the fact that I don't want to give the same artist a DD after 3 months if I already featured them. I try to make it a bit more months so other people get a chance as well. Sometimes an artist already had quite some DD's, but I always check the categories of those previous DD's as well. Once there was a deviant who already had 5 DD's before, but only 1 of those was in the APN gallery, so I didn't see a problem there.

I'd like people to write a little description of why they think the deviation should get a DD. Sometimes the words make the deviation stand out even more or shows me something I didn't see yet. The description doesn't have to be long, just make it longer than 'great', or 'amazing' or 'great lighting'. Or 'cute'. Descriptions can really do a lot of good!

I think those are the most important factors that I consider..

Oh and that when there's a person in the picture, I still want it to be about the pet, landscape or flowers they're holding, for example. It's still APN, not portrait. Otherwise I'll pass it on to another GM

What artist in your Gallery Section do you look up to?
Phew, even tougher question. ~detail24 always has been a great photographer in my eyes. I have a few of his prints and I adore them. But I also really enjoy the work of ~jjuuhhaa, *CainPascoe, *hougaard, *DrewHopper, =r3novatio and someone closer to home; *LarsVanDeGoor. I could name way more people if I'd think about it a minute longer, there's a lot of people that I look up to.

What is your favorite type of art (Either to make or to look at?)
I'd say Macro since that's what I've been doing a lot before, but I haven't been shooting much lately. I'd really love to get my hands on some Lee filters, though, but they're really hard to get in the Netherlands. But when I'll get them I want to do some more waterscapes and landscapes, because *LarsVanDeGoor, that I mentioned above as well, really inspired me.

What would you want to tell the next GM of your gallery?
Don't underestimate it. Not just for the GM of the APN gallery, but in general. It's a lot more 'work' than I thought it would be, but it's very fulfilling to me. I like communicating with the community, hearing their ideas, their suggestions, helping promote their contests, etc.

What would you want to tell deviants who submit to your gallery?
Love nature and her beauty. Don't trash it. Enjoy it. And don't use flash with animals

Is there anything else you'd like to include about yourself, being a GM, DD's etc.?
I haven't done too much yet, but there are some things coming up. In a few days there'll be a contest and in two weeks I'm doing 'something' with `ginkgografix.
I've been sick lately though, so I'm trying to take it easy and get better. Combined with some personal issues, all my plans have been taking quite some time longer than I would've liked to.

And about DD's? Keep 'em coming! (But please check if the deviant hasn't received a DD in the last three months. I've been getting a lot of suggestions for deviants that had a DD the week before, or even that day!)

Photography, Photo Manipulation and Editing

Before I start this news article I want to address what each of these are.

Photo Manipulation: Photo manipulation is the application of image editing techniques to photographs in order to create an illusion or deception (in contrast to mere enhancement or correction), through analog or digital means. (i.e. Often viewed as taking more than 1 photo and making an image).

Photography: The process in which a person documents an event, scene, object or other 3D item with the use of a Camera.

Photograph Editing: Often using applications such as GIMP or Photoshop to crop, change color etc. of a photograph.

What is and Is Not Photography

So, I am sure you are wondering where I want to go with this article. Well, long story short, I am interested in your opinions to answer THIS QUESTION:

Where is the line between Photography and Photo Editing?

Depending on who you ask, different people will say different things. Many photographers today take photos with the expectations to use Photoshop to color correct, or in the case of HDR Photograph completely alter the image.

But is that still photography?

Many Nature Photographers have heard of Dan Jurak, who is an amazing photographer and creates gorgeous images.
But he even depends on Photoshop to make his images as beautiful as they are. (Check out [link] for an example)

Every photographer sets their own boundaries of what is and is not photography. My own personal boundaries are:

For an image to be appropriate to consider a real photo:
- Cropping - Allowed
- Color Correction - Allowed
- Retouching (For faces) - Allowed
- Darkness/Light (Contrast) - Allowed
- Sharpness - Allowed

Everything else should be planned in the camera, and be set prior to the photo...

In this contest we are working with #dALinkSystem. The link system is a simple system that allows you and other deviants to become more noticed! A number of the Staff of DevNews uses it, and we would like to encourager you to try it out!

The whole idea is very simple: "Link another artists submission in your artist's comment box. It helps everyone's exposure and finds undiscovered art."

So this article was spurred during a conversation with some other deviants today as well as a a discussion I had with some real life friends, I felt that I wanted to write it up and see if anyone would actually be interested in reading it.

What does "HATE" mean?

"To dislike intensely or passionately; feel extreme aversion for or extreme hostility toward; detest: to hate the enemy; to hate bigotry."

- Dictionary.com

What does this mean though? "to hate the enemy". This part of this definition interests me. It implies that when someone shows hate at someone or something it means that they feel that they are an enemy... Enemies, as pointed out by a friend are expected not to be around; i.e. Hate seems to imply that you don't want someone or something around.

That is a very strong statement.

Now most of us have hated something in our lives. A job, bully, trip, person, etc. but think back, when you said you 'Hated' them, did you mean that you didn't want them around?

For the most part, people don't mean words like 'hate' in such a way.

Why is "HATE" relevant

Anyone who watches daily deviations, art or even a number of deviants on this site will see 'hate' from one deviant to another. Whether it is:

"Why the **** did this piece of crap get a DD? I hate it!!!"

or

"Idiot, everyone hates you!!! Go away!!!"

you have probably seen something like this somewhere.


But next time... take a step back. Think about it twice, when you say you hate a person, piece of art anything, think about 2 things:

1. Do you really hate this person/piece of art enough that you are wishing that they/it didn't exist?
2. Think about what hate, and comments that mean hatred upon another really means, and how they might take it.

Art is Art...

One of the great things about Art is that it can be anything the artist wants it to be. There are famous paintings that are nothing but a line on a piece of canvas. There are pieces of literature that have just 5 words!

Anything can be art in the eye of the beholder.

Next time think twice before you 'hate' someone or something

I decided it was time to have a little fun, so here it goes!

Post in THIS POLL with your favorite emoticon that is in the emoticon list on deviantART. The top 5 emoticons that are nominated will move onto the next round, a poll that chooses the best emoticon.

In addition, by nominating an emoticon you enter yourself to be able to win 50 points! One person who nominates the winning emoticon will get these points!

So how it works fully:
