As you're all bound to be aware, the New Year is soon approaching and 2011 is nearly upon us! We here at DevNews have decided that in order to celebrate and bring the new year in with a bang, we're going to hold a very special chat event and you're all invited!


IN ADDITION THE CHAT EVENT WILL HAVE PREMIUM MEMBERSHIPS AND POINTS UP FOR GRABS!

The following two chatrooms will be used during the event:

#DevNews is the main chat for the event, which will be used to host all kinds of fun and games (including trivia, muro tasks and more!) all through the day/night!

#DevNewsCountdown will be used to count down into the new year! When it's nearly time for you to count down the clock, join this room and count down with your fellow deviants!

The whole idea of this is to show how important community is, and to support it for the 2011-2012 year!

Community: "a body of persons of common and especially professional interests scattered through a larger society; [a group with] common character" - Merriam Webster Dictionary

Community is one of the main drives on deviantART and one that I personally look up to. Community is what allows deviants to learn so much about art through comments, critiques and the loving help of other deviants.

So many deviants have helped me learn nearly 80% of what I know about photography. It's this great community that I would like to give thanks to in this project.

This project starts now. The aim is to give every deviant a hug and spread the community spirit throughout all of them.

All you have to do is this:

1. Fave this article so others can see it!
2. Pick any deviant(s) or group(s)
3. Comment a hug emoticon on their page with a link back to this article. (Example: [link] )
4. If you get a hug, you also should return it (although you don't have to!)

Then, hopefully, those you hug will see this article, and give other deviants they know a hug, and so on until we give as many deviants as possible a hug.

Lunar Eclipse: December 20-21 2010

A lunar eclipse is when the moon passes between the Sun and Earth perfectly to create a "shadow" that blocks out the moon.

It begins in just under 1 hour for the first part! Here are the times for the entire thing!

According to Wikipedia (Yeah for this it's reliable)

    P1 (First contact): Beginning of the penumbral eclipse. The Earth's penumbra makes contact with the outer limb of the Moon.
    U1 (Second contact): Beginning of the partial eclipse. The Earth's umbra touches the outer limb of the Moon.
    U2 (Third contact): Beginning of the total eclipse. The Moon is located completely within the Earth's umbra.
    Greatest eclipse: The peak stage of the total eclipse. The Moon is at its closest to the center of the umbra.
    U3 (Fourth contact): End of the total eclipse. The Moon's outer limb exits Earth's umbra.
    U4 (Fifth contact): End of the partial eclipse. The Earth's umbra leaves the surface of the Moon.
    P2 (Sixth contact): End of the penumbral eclipse. The Earth's shadow no longer makes any contact with the Moon.

GMArt is a new interview series that interviews only current GM's. As each GM has his and her own ideas, standards etc. it's nice to learn from them!

This article also tries to look at more than a normal interview does.

I met Anne early in her time as a deviantART Volunteer. It has been hard to see some of the tasks she has been given as many of them include having to stop angry deviants who dislike a DD that was given. She talks about this some in her interview.

Anne is an amazing GM, she has given some really remarkable DD's, and is a wonderful person to talk to.

Thank you so much for being willing to do this interview!

How did you volunteer to become a GM? What was the experience like? / When you found out you had been chosen to be a GM, what did you immediately want to do?
I can't really answer these two questions, because i never applied to become a GM. When !DCZed stepped down i gave it a short thought, but that was all.
Then a few days later or so, there was some chat event and i asked $Moonbeam13 if there would be any chance that there might be two GMs for dA related. I can’t really remember her answer, but I think it was something like “She is thinking about it” and it was no final “No”.

Later I was talking to a friend and he suggested that we both could apply and give it a try. Having a person at my side I trust, I felt more comfortable with the idea. At the same time we were talking I was contacted by $Moonbeam13 in the chatroom, asking for my mail-address. And a few days later again I was a GM, as a partner of `GaioumonBatou (who I just heard a few times of before lol) D:


Have you been able to do that?
When I knew that I would get the hat, there was nothing I wanted to do. I guess it’s different for people who really wanted to become a GM one day. Maybe I was too shocked, that I got contacted by Danie lol.
I just prepared myself for the upcoming craziness and excitement of friends, who always wanted me to do this



When you give a DD to someone, what are the factors you consider?
Difficult to answer, because I have “guidelines” for each subcategory of the dAr galleries. But in general I stick to the words on my former lecturer: It doesn’t have to be perfect, it must convince the audience.
So let’s take deviantIDs for example. It’s great to see high class photos as IDs, but if they can’t tell me anything about the person, they are just boring. An ID should be able to give me a hint of what kind of artist I am looking at. It should be personal and maybe have a little story to tell – in which way doesn’t matter. It just needs to be there, to make you look twice.

Code related works, shouldn’t just look nice, but also work without problems. Buggy deviations don’t get featured. And it should match its intention. A journal skin that hurts the eyes because of flashy colors isn’t a good choice. Or a browser script that constantly annoys you, because elements get screwed up.
Suggestions should make a sense and be useful for more than one person(still not for everyone ;)), Stamps should be able to support a message either by words only or with the help of animations and images.

And so on… But I also prefer artists with no DDs over those who already got some.



What artist in your Gallery Section do you look up to?
Though question because there are so many different sections and I am not a person who becomes a fan of something/one. And it’s not like you can say that someone is an dAr artist.
But i love the works of `electricnet (the code master), `thespook(mainly his CSS code snippets, because I am always to lazy to give such things a try), !Kikariz (for her cute stamps and fella artworks) and a lot of stamp artists in general. It’s amazing how much they can put on such a little canvas!


When you were a child, was art part of your life?
Hm, only a small part maybe. Of course every child loves to doodle and color something with paint. But no one in my family really had any artistic interests, so there was no support/inspiration in that direction.
It just came later, when I joined the first online community.



What is your favorite type of art (Either to make or to look at?)
I have no favourite type. Mainly because I don’t like to limit myself. Perhaps that is a little curse as well, because I never try to master one medium, but prefer to try out everything.
I love taking photos, I do traditional and digital painting/drawing, I love to work within the field of Artisan Crafts(baking, paper folding, knitting, crochet, …), I did Flash programming, I code, I have worked with 3D and I have made films – and according to that I like to look at all kind of art as well.
There is too much great stuff to explore and experience, so I just love art in general!



What would you want to tell the next GM of your gallery?
Get thick skin… really
dAr is great, because it is full of awesome things, but they aren’t appreciated by everyone as it is different to the typical art galleries. Especially stamps and suggestions are the worst thing to give a DD to for quite a few people.
My aim always was to educate people about dAr, to make them understand what it is about and I hope that the GM who will follow me, will go on with that. dAr might be not the place for the best masterpieces of digital art, but it is an important part of deviantART.

Once the new GM has figured out what he or she wants to do, they should stick to their way and try to support the dAr artists/gallery in any way possible. It will be worth it and the GM will get a lot of support in return as well.



Does Music, Life etc. change the art you create?
Of course, they way you live and love is the way that affects you. I wouldn’t say that it directly changes what I am creating, but life/music and other things form you as a person and if you change, your art will change as well.



What would you want to tell deviants who submit to your gallery?
Make sure that you understand what the gallery is about. Most of the time as a GM I spent on working guidelines and news articles that explain what to the galleries belong.
Most of the galleries are misunderstood. For example deviantART tutorials is not for tutorials made by deviants, but about the site and it’s features, yet people submit art tutorials there all the time – and then might wonder why no one finds them.

What do you enjoy and dislike about being a GM?
I don’t think I have enough time and space to write it all down, so I’ll try to list the most important things.

Like
- meeting all kind of new persons
- having the chance to learn more about dA and how it works (or maybe I was just ignorant before lol)
- being able to adjust the gallery you take care for to the peoples need
- giving artists more attention by featuring their works as a DD
- help people with their ideas and promoting (but you can do that without the hat as well)


Dislike
- random drama thrown your direction just because of the hat
- personal attacks of people you never have talked to before (or that knew you before)
- that people stop thinking you are an in individual human person and you kinda aren’t allowed to voice an opinion without being a “bad GM”



Is there anything else you'd like to include about yourself, being a GM, DD's etc.?
Maybe not to something specific, but it would be great if people would learn how to respect others and their works more, without flaming or getting rude right away. Everyone has a different opinion and that is great. But whatever you do, you can do it in a mature way as well. And it doesn’t matter if you disagree on a poll, on an april 1st joke, on a GM or a DD.

Whatever you are doing is what will affect the people around you(and yourself). If you are rude all the time, why do you expect anyone to be nice to you. I am not preaching a fluffy “we love us all” world, but there is too many random and stupid drama out there, that it is not even funny anymore.

Most deviants on dA who follow the news section of dA know that recently there have been an increase in "Rant News".

Rant News: I describe as news that really is inciting riots and anger rather than finding a solution.

Rant news has basically taken over with anger from deviants about the 1,000 image search limit, about the help desk being too slow or and even I have seen some anger directed about Premiums, and other such aspects of dA.

Now, I am not going to go in and fight all of these topics because I won't win. Those that want to fight the system and complain about it will continue to do so, there is no stopping them.


For example... When deviantART V7 came out, the news article had 4700+ devious rejections. Along with posts like this one that I have quoted:

"I HATE THIS VERSION AND WHEN I SAY I HATE IT I MEAN IT ><I HAVE TO REFRESH THE PAGE 100 TIMES TO SEE THE DEVIATION AND IT'S HORRIBLE. I TRY TO SEE THE SAME DEVIATION 1 WEEK AGO AND HAD BEEN TRYING TO SEE IT EVERYDAY AND IT NOT WORK'S. I F****** HATE THIS VERSION I F********** HATE IT ><"

From there, a petition to bring back V6 was started.

This continued until deviantART had time to fix all of the issues. It was a brand new release, OF COURSE IT HAD ISSUES!

But, Look what happened... Over 4700 deviants hated dA V7, as time went along they got used to it. dedicated deviants submitted suggestions to the Suggestions Forum the +help desk, and made more and more suggestions of things to correct.

You know what happened? deviantART fixed them!
Then improved them.

deviantART Listened...

dA has some of the most amazing customer support. The fact that the day V7 was released, the chart at #dt showed syncs more than once every hour of the day. That fact alone is amazing. There are very few companies (let alone with 15-16 MILLION users) that can claim the same.

Now back to news,

In all honesty, posting a news article that condemns deviantART for something they have done will not fix it. The correct way to go about this is as follows:

I asked `sine-out and $dxd for what they would suggest to a deviant, and I wanted to share that now.

"Actually make a suggestion, via the suggestion forum, and, if you want to complain, be civil about it.
Going on a hate fest in the news section is all fine and good, it's entertaining, but, it doesn't actually do anything except annoy those you want help from. Also, make sure to look up and fully research what your problem is before you actually post. B"

Instead of doing something to anger staff and other deviants, why not find a solution.

Right now, posting a news article is dropping a bomb.
Right now, posting in the suggestions forum, or filling out a help desk ticket is making an Alliance and Trade agreement.
Which do you think is better?

Hey Deviants!

I have thought about this a lot lately, and maybe because this time of year is all about friends and family, so I thought I would publish this article...

Online Communities these days are extremely popular. Look at deviantART... 16 Million deviants and growing every minute! But why? Communities online allow for a second chance. When you walk into a forum or chat room with a screen name no one knows anything about you...

Your age
Gender
Race
Religion
Size/Weight
Looks

And every other characteristic that people are otherwise judged on in the 'real world'.

The fact that people have the choice to tell people about these characteristics or not, and that people really don't mind... On dA, it is likely that I have friends from ages 13-100... There are deviants who are 15, 20, 25, 30, 60, and so on... The fact that on a daily basis you can be friends and chat with all of these people is amazing.

Why it's Amazing...

Whether or not you want to admit it, everyone judges people from the second they see them walking down a hallway in the mall, at a friends house, in a grocery store... Racial profiling is an extreme example of this that has recently popped up with a lot of Police Men in the US. But on a website, all you have is that Screen name...

So when you make friends on a website it isn't because of popularity, looks, age, gender etc. It's personalities... It's how you act and talk with people.

If I had to guess, I would say that I watch people from nearly every continent, and most countries... That's simply Amazing!

Where else can you go and say "Fred lives in the US, but his best friend lives in Argentina!" It just is incredible.

The Fact is... That if this continues on this trend, people will eventually eliminate Racism, Sexism, Ageism, etc. And potentially even war...

Bet you never thought about that...

Where am I going with this? I am honestly not sure. I would love all of your opinions on this subject... Do you think that a future generation that meets people without knowing anything about them could eliminate racism, sexism and other such things? Could it even eliminate war?

Welcome to the second edition of GMArt!

GMArt is a new interview series that interviews only current GM's. As each GM has his and her own ideas, standards etc. it's nice to learn from them!

This article also tries to look at more than a normal interview does.

This series is not on a set schedule, although you can expect about 1 or 2 a week. They will be posted when GM's actually write back

`Timothy-Sim

I met Timothy a few months ago, he has featured some amazing DD's if you haven't seen them yet, you ahve to take a look! He is the GM for Photojournalism.

How did you volunteer to become a GM? What was the experience like?

I am deeply in love with photojournalism. I remember coming into dA and seeing how `evanhwong worked with `Helewidis manning the gallery. Even as I began to improve on my own works as I drew inspiration from the gallery and in turn began to contribute with my own works and inputs, I wanted to take it to the next step to be an example and help to push through what Evan had started for the gallery.

When I applied and got the post, it was a moment of exhilaration, but when you begin to let it settle in, you realise that you have a huge weight of responsibility on your shoulder that you have to bear to keep the community afloat. One has to know who to look for in the community and who is the right people to reach out to. It's been a good 5-6months since I've taken the post and I'm moving on to building more exciting phases that will get the community to interact better and share their PJ works.


When you found out you had been chosen to be a GM, what did you immediately want to do?

I immediately wanted to hold a contest and make it a really big event.

Have you been able to do that?

Well, it hasn't happened yet, I originally wanted to hold it alongside !kyle28 who was then the Street GM. I'd also pulled a few big names in the gallery to judge, but being good with what they do, it can be hard to contact each other on dA and keep the flow there.

What I can say for sure though, is that by the end of my first year here as a GM, that contest will happen

When you give a DD to someone, what are the factors you consider?

I factor in Newsworthiness first of all. It has to tell a story. If it's just some picture randomly taken and is kinda artsy but doesn't hold water, it throw it out immediately. Photojournalism is about reportage and as much as there can be creativity in it, there has to be a drawing factor of newswortiness.

I also strongly urge anyone who does photojournalism not to over-process their works with photoshop. Even toying with the shadows and highlights is overdoing it. My guideline? If it's just pulling in the contrasts and pulling a little curve to keep the image from being too warm or cool, that's as far as i'll allow it. Anything else, the moment I see that it's gone too far, I'll just reject it.

Oh, I also take suggestions, but they have to be genuine. I can tell the ones who really love the pictures they suggest and want the world to see them because they want to share them, and I can tell them from the ones who just suggest hundreds of pictures every five minutes just because they want their one moment of glory on the 'Suggested by' tag below the DD.

What artist in your Gallery Section do you look up to?

`evanhwong has always been the mentor to me. Giving great advice and once in a while kicking serious ass when I make a poor decision in real. Evan's been a great source of help in my career, since I can attribute my recent job post in Reuters to his butt kicking lecture to me.

`contains-mild-peril is one of my biggest favourite photojournalists, keeping things real and making pictures that I wish I was there to have covered as well. He's one of my role-models that I want to be when I get the chance.

`straightfromcamera a good guy who has been another wonderful source of inspiration that keeps me on edge when i make photos. My favourite picture of all dA belongs to a picture in his gallery. Can you guess which one it is?

`tanya-n is also another one I very much respect. She's been deep in India profiling and documenting life there and seeing the pictures that come from there, some quirky and some heartfelt, I can only have deep admiration for her.

When you were a child, was art part of your life?

I never enjoyed art. My parents would sign me up for art classes where I'd have to draw something and I swear my drawing is abysmal. I couldn't even draw a stick man proper. I suspect I still can't. I'm terrible with a pen and pencil.

Tell us a story of something that happened in your life!

Well, stone me for being religious, but I'm proud to say Jesus is my drug. I'm not just a photojournalist keeping things real, but I'm a God-fearing Christian who's also the head of my youth's media ministry. Every step of my way in my life, that happened, I have every right to be grateful and thankful for the open doors that have been presented to me, and the people who have been placed around me to guide me to them.

What is your favorite type of art (Either to make or to look at?)

Being a photographer, the favourite type of art I'd love to make and look at would be pictures. A picture does speak a lot for itself. I particularly enjoy looking at pictures from all over the world in [link]

What would you want to tell the next GM of your gallery?

Stay fiesty, the community bites.

Does Music, Life etc. change the art you create?

Yes it does. Music can determine my mood and life in itself can determine who and how I document. Take my grandfather's life and death for example. It was something that changed the way I saw life and how to took pictures. It changed the way I documented things. I will never be the same again because of it.

What's your favorite joke?

I don't have one right now actually. I'm more of an on the spot improvisation kinda guy. And I laugh at anything that's really good.

What would you want to tell deviants who submit to your gallery?

Know what you're submitting. Don't do it because you think it fits or because the genre looks cool. Know your place and if you want to have the passion to really document life with a story. Do it with conviction!

What do you enjoy and dislike about being a GM?

I enjoy working with other GMs and supporting each other when we have problems or drama. The DD process is also definitely something I admit is enjoyable. It brings pride to my heart when I see a poorly received work shine through for what its worth when it gets recognition as a DD.

I particularly hate facades people put on when they suggest works as DDs and I hate the fact that there are some people who complain the world over when they feel their works deserve to be in the gallery when it doesn't and it gets shifted to its rightful place. All part of the drama in dA.

Is there anything else you'd like to include about yourself, being a GM, DD's etc.?

Nah nothing much. It's been a fun ride so far and I'm enjoying every minute of it. Oh and I'm gonna be late for work if I keep typing this. I need to get out of the house now! Bye!

Hello Deviants!

So, many of you may have seen the DD today from `ginkgografix's dA Related DDs.



I was the one who suggested it, and have already seen comments that say "I don't like how this is a Daily Deviation". I wanted to take a minute and actually explain why I suggested it, and why this relates to everyone.

One of the great things about deviantART is that the site doesn't limit you to just art... There are Groups, Chat Rooms, Forums, Journals, and more that create a second part of deviantART... Community.

Many deviants, myself included, enjoy both the community and the art... Together they make up what deviantART truly is.

When another deviant says "I don't like how this is a Daily Deviation" to the piece suggested above, I want to point out something.

If deviants are allowed to grow, and critique each others art, why can't deviants do the same for community?

The dARelated Gallery is very focused on community. deviantART suggestions are suggestions to improve the community as well as the site.

This is the same as in any other "Art" gallery, and should be able to get the same recognition.

Many artists even pride them selves on art in the form of community, from Custom User boxes, to Tutorials, and even stamps!

So next time you see a DD, feature, or even just a deviation sitting out there, don't push it away because it is related to the community... You wouldn't want the same done to the Art side of deviantART.

This DD that was given today I suggested with the hope that it could improve the community.

Groups are a great feature, every now and then there are more features added to them to improve them... I saw this deviation as a great idea! One that hadn't been done before but could be so useful in groups such as #stamp-kingdom that require applications to the groups.

Granted, this is just the start of this feature... It could continue to grow, require links, require thumbs, require a keyword so that it is clear that you read the rules... It's endless, but ~Sostopher started the idea, and deserves just as much recognition as anyone...

So a little bit over 3 hours ago, I sat down and watched Harry Potter.

My overall thoughts: 7.5/10
Cinematography: 9/10
Music: 7/10
Storyline: 8/10
Storyline kept to book: 7/10

Overall it was great!

I would not advise seeing it UNLESS YOU HAVE READ THE BOOK!

There are many small explanatory scenes taken out. For example; During the water scene in the woods, we really don't find out why it is that Ron has to destroy the horcrux...
etc...

Where it ends: It ends right after Voldemort finds Dumbledore's Grave and gets the elder wand letting out a huge bolt of lightning.

Overall, I would highly suggest seeing this movie! Well worth the extra money to see it on a big screen!
