You Watchin'? Check in - Watcher Thank Yous+Points

Journal Entry: Thu Jan 3, 2013, 12:28 PM

Hello Deviants!

So it's 2013, and so far, I have not posted anything for the new year. Eh... perhaps you're happy about that, or perhaps, you're feeling that I wasn't festive enough... So let's be festive. Deviant style.

I would like to thank a few of my watchers for watching me and making 2013 a year to remember. So I will randomly be giving out:
:bulletblue: 100 :points:
:bulletblue: 25 Features
:bulletblue: 5 Selection features (I will choose a selection from your gallery to feature)
All you have to do:
:bulletgreen: Watch me :+devwatch:
:bulletgreen: Fave this journal :star:
:bulletgreen: Comment with your favorite PLZ account, emote, or write something fun :typerhappy:
This also doubles as my watcher-check in. I feel like this is more fun than just a boring poll

Happy new year deviants!

Art-for-Artists Project Stopped by dA Terms

Journal Entry: Wed Jan 2, 2013, 6:41 AM

Hello Deviants,

A few people may have already noticed that yesterday my commission widgets were removed by the dA Staff. This was due to the fact that this project actually violated some terms and conditions. This was unknown to me as well as a few others that I had checked with. I was sent a note to clarify what went on, and asked for permission to share it with you today to clarify any issues.
Hi Zev,
I'm noting you today regarding your use of the Commissions widget.
While we understand and appreciate your desire to help your fellow artists with a charitable project of this type, unfortunately taking donations via the Commissions system is not a permissible usage of the widget. While your intentions were valid, unfortunately allowing such usage would open us up to many other areas of abuse by those with less noble intentions.
As a result of this, the commission purchases have been refunded to the original buyers and the funds removed from your My Earnings account.
For more information please review the Premium Content Terms of Service.

So unfortunately, this project is over . All donations that were given have been refunded. My apologies to everyone for the inconviencence with this, it was not my intention in any way to create an issue.

Best wishes,

Zev

Please consider faving or commenting on this journal to help get the word out. If you are able to share it, that would be amazing!

This last year there have been some amazing fundraisers from deviants including =ToxicAlice92 and `JoseFelipeM who gave a lot of time and energy to their projects this year. These projects were amazing as Alice's helped those in need, and Jose helped 100 community members on deviantART. But this year I intend to help another group. During the first quarter of this year I am going to try a project.

I would like to announce the Art-for-Artists Project. This project will intend to help new or accomplished artists on deviantART through the generosity of others.

There was recently a new feature announced on deviantART that allows deviants to pay for commissions using points and then the person offering the commissions may take the points out in cash. As a photographer and filmmaker, commissions do not do a whole lot for me, but I don't see a reason why this feature can't help others.

I am also currently working on a project,The Visual Narrative Project and in trying to raise and find funds, I realized how little money there is out there for artists.

The Idea

The Art-for-Artists Project is an opportunity for artists in the deviantART community to use points to help fund a fellow-artists' artistic endeavor.

I am going to have my commission widget up and running, and will be accepting commissions that will be paid for through features, dedications, etc. at different levels of involvement.
I will then take this money out at the end of the first quarter and offer it back to deviants who are trying to fund an artistic endeavor. This may be anything in any art form!

The Goal

I would like to be able to give out $100 to 10 deviants. In total, $1000.

This money would then be presented to deviants who wish to follow their dream and achieve artistic excellence through a project or event they wish to hold. Currently, deviantART has a grants system in place for grants from deviantART. This system is absolutely wonderful, but is run by the staff here. I would like this project to be community lead, and community run project. Receiving money from fellow community members only helps to strengthen an artists' belief in their craft all the more.

How this works

There is now a commission widget on my page with the following offers:

:bulletblue: Deviant (Name Mention) - 100 :points: ($1 earned)
:bulletblue: Deviant Lover (Single piece feature) - 500 :points: ($5 earned)
:bulletblue: Deviant Enthusiast (Gallery Selection Feature) - 1000 :points: ($10 earned)
:bulletblack: Silver Donor (A journal will be dedicated to you) - 2000 :points: ($20 earned)
:bulletred: Bronze Donor (A photograph will be dedicated to you) - 3000 :points: ($30 earned)
:bulletorange: Gold Donor (A film will be dedicated to you) - 4000 :points: ($40 earned)
:bulletgreen: Premium Donor (Artwork shown with commission widget for entire project)- 4000+ :points: ($40+ earned)

The not so fine print:
* Dedications are done via the description of a piece of art on deviantART posted by `TimberClipse
** Features will be done on an "as needed" basis.
*** In the event that a deviant wishes to remain an anonymous donor, they may choose to have their dedication or feature go to another deviant. Simply send a note to be sure that I keep it anonymous.

Once these points are all collected, they will be taken out through the system in place on deviantART as US dollars. Deviants will then have two weeks in order to apply for these funds. A team of deviants (who will be selected from incredibly active deviants in the community) will then choose which deviants will receive the money.

FAQ

Q: deviantART takes 20%! Why should I do this!?
A: To be honest, I thought about this a lot before deciding this was the best system to do this project in... but I realized something. This community is here because of the amazing people that keep this place running. I see no reason why we should not support that. Support OUR community, and through the exchange of points to dollars, "donate" a percentage to deviantART.

Q: How do we know if these funds will be used as requested?
A: Deviants who request will need to show what they wish to use it for with adequate proof that they will be able to complete the project.

Q: Are there limits or restrictions?
A: You must be 13 years old or older. You may live anywhere on Earth that PayPal is permitted to receive funds. The funds may be requested in any amount from $25-$100. No donation is necessary to receive funds, but is suggested.

Q: How long will this run?
A: Ideally, I'd like to reach the goal by the end of the first quarter, but, the drop dead date will be start of June (halfway through the year)

Q: How can I stay up to date?
A: I will be periodically posting updates through my journal. Feel free to watch me!

Note about BETA: Although any issues would be unexpected, due to the fact that the commission widget is so new and still in BETA, in the event that you have trouble completing a donation, please contact `TimberClipse via note and alert him. Same goes if a donation does not seem to go through, etc.

Week 1, 2013 at #deviant365!

Tue Jan 1, 2013, 12:00 AM
:icontimberclipse:

Hello Everyone!

I would like to formally welcome each and every one of you to the official #deviant365 group! We have a fantastic year ahead for all of you filled with events, contests, weekly tasks and perhaps most importantly, prizes! Every week we will be posting a task that hopes to get those creative juices flowing in your mind. Sometimes they will be simple, sometimes you might have to submit art, and sometimes they might be a week long task you partake in! But in every case, we hope to make them fun!

Happy New Year, and may these tasks lead you to your greatest endeavor!

This week the task is to answer this question: What are your goals, ambitions, or artistic endeavors for the upcoming year? Comment with your idea, and two deviants who do will win a devWEAR T-Shirt of their choice!

Plus, we want you to get some exposure! Submit something new you posted on deviantART to the new gallery category!

Good luck! The next task will come on Monday!

Hello Deviants!

We are so excited that the new year is almost upon us! On January 1st, 2013 the fun begins! Weekly tasks start flowing and we start handing out prizes!

But before the new year, we would like to get the word out that #deviant365 is up and running for 2013! Please consider sharing this journal with your friends, watchers and groups. We really want to be there for as many deviants as we can.
#deviant365 aims to bring the deviousness to the deviantART community one week at a time, 365 days a year.
deviant365 is deviantART's official 365 Project where you will be provided with weekly tasks for the whole year. The aim of this is to give you motivation to participate in areas of our community that perhaps you have never experienced before, make new friends, work on your art, learn more about deviantART and enhance your experience on deviantART.
So without much more waiting, we are looking forward to the 1st and hope you are as well!

The Internet is a Better Place - Feature

Journal Entry: Sat Dec 29, 2012, 7:18 PM

PE: Film and Animation

Sun Dec 16, 2012, 11:37 AM

As 2012 is coming to a close we can reflect on a lot of new technologies this year. Perhaps one of the biggest advances in technology was that of filmmaking both in the professional and pro-sumer categories with a new GoPro that has 4K capabilities, the Canon 5D MKIII, the Sony F5, and perhaps one of the biggest moves was that of the Blackmagic Cinema Camera. With the exception of the Sony F5, these cameras all came in under $5000, making them readily available both for the professional world and for the pro-sumer world.

Filmmaker vs. YouTube

With all of these cameras becoming more and more affordable, one must ask: what makes a filmmaker and what makes someone with a YouTube account and a camera? I believe that difference is in the technique, either way what someone films is telling a story, whether it is of a scene, a fictional story or documenting an event, person, etc. it still tells a story. So what has to be looked at instead are the key fundamental parts of filmmaking:

The Quality of the story
The quality of the story is likely the most important component, a lot of people will forgive bad technical aspects if there is a solid story. During an NYU Tisch Film program I took in Ireland this summer, I was shown something astonishing. A solid story requires one of two aspects:
:bulletblack: Complex Characters, Simple Story
:bulletblack: Simple Characters, Complex Story
Think about your favorite movie, for this, let's take something recent such as Batman: The Dark Knight Rises. What was excellent about the story that got so many good reviews this last year? At the base level it was that the story was simple, and the characters brought that story to life. It is these characteristics that allow for excellent stories to be formed.

This is proven time and time again, even in older classics. Casablanca for example: Simple story -people are trying to get out of Casablanca. Complex Characters -determining who is on who's side, backstories of the characters. Citizen Kane is also similar: Simple story -what is rosebud? Complex characters -look into the life of Charles Foster Kane in order to try and find out what "rosebud" is through the memories of numerous other characters. This concept is hugely important for the story to be a success, as if there is too much complexity, the story will confuse people, too little, and you create a boring predictable story.

The Cinematography or Animation
The actual visual component is also astoundingly important. Take Anna Karenina, a 2012 movie that just came out. It's astoundingly beautiful, perhaps one of the prettiest films this year. This movie uses a large number of components to allow for a fluid cinematic experience. Next time you watch a film, appreciate the cinematography, you'll notice there is likely constant motion keeping your attention. This motion allows the scene to feel real and engaging to the viewer.

The Editing
Editing in a film today makes a big difference. It is less about the software you choose to use, and more of how you choose to edit. There are numerous styles of editing, but it is perhaps the most important part. Post-production can re-shape a story in the event of a bad shoot, or can make the story in the case of a documentary. Without it, the story can be entirely lost.

Another form of filmmaking is that of time-lapse  Time-lapse photography is taking a series of shots of a subject as it moves or changes over a period of time. The most common forms of this are of stars, clouds, tides, etc. These often are created to tell a story or show passage of time in movies. As most films are shot in 24 or 30 frames per second, (although, this is changing, but that's a whole different story!) it would take 24 or 30 different photographs to make just one single second of video.

Yet another form of filmmaking is animation. Animation doesn't require camerawork at all! In fact, using similar forms to time-lapse, one could create an animation without a computer at all! Some of the best animations are drawn by hand while others can be generated using computer animation. Both of these styles make for a cinematic experience that once again tells a story, just in a different form.

There are numerous types of film both in the world and on deviantART. The following was written by the amazing ^kingmancheng who is the current community volunteer for the film and animation categories on deviantART.

Documentary

A documentary is a factual piece of film with the purpose of either preserving a piece of history or some form of instruction. Generally they have a sort of lesson or message that they are trying to document.

It brings a world of understanding to those who seek knowledge.
It show us the little things in the world that often overlooked.
It is the window to we use to see things we cannot normally see in our everyday lives.

Documentary filmmakers are not scared to go out talk to people, discover the world, and ask questions about everything they see.

Music Video

27th January 1984, British singer and lyricist Morrissey was asked why there was no video to accompany song they were releasing soon. His famous response was:
No, we really want to bypass the whole video market.
I think it's something that is going to die very quickly and I want to herald the death of that. It has nothing whatsoever to do with music and I want total music.
Well we're still waiting for him to herald that!

Music videos are short films that are produced to accompany music for artistic and/or promotional means. This medium began from music being over slideshow images. Over the years this has taken practically every form of film making that you can imagine and it continues to evolve alongside the film and animation industry.

Short Films

Well what can I say? It is everything it says on the tin! A short film is basically a piece of film that isn't long enough to be a featured film. Funny thing about this definition is, that there is no actual line drawn as to how long a film should be before it is considered a short film. These films are often low-budget or non-profit films, and resources generally only allow for so much production work.

One of the most brilliant things about short films is that animators and filmmakers often allow themselves more creative freedom for a range of reasons. A lot of film festivals have a short film category, and some are dedicated to short films entirely. Often these can be a creative groups earliest films, sometimes they're to help fund bigger projects.

In the same manner as books, sometimes readers like to pick up a big epic, sometimes a short story. The same can be said for many entertainment mediums, and films are certainly no exception. Short films are often in a league of their own and they have certainly established themselves in the film and animation world.

So you have finished your film? That's great! What now?

Well, there are a number of different approaches. Large budget Hollywood films may immediately open in cinemas across the world, but these are films with budgets in excess of $100-$200 Million normally. Most films with smaller budgets open to a small audience at film festivals first. Submissions to these festivals are not always cheap, but can lead to filmmakers being invited with their films to additional festivals. Be warned though, festivals have strict requirements, and where a movie premiers does sometimes affect how well it will do.

But let's say you just made the film for fun, sharing it on a website such as deviantART, Vimeo or YouTube is always an option! When you do this, be sure to have it get as much exposure as you can as it will bring more people to enjoy this film and future films you create.

Happy Shooting!

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Hello Everyone,

So, for those of you who may not have noticed, the footer on dA shows some stats about dA. Recently it has been holding strong with two important numbers.
24 million deviants
240 million pieces of art
Those are some very impressive statistics. Looking past the "dead" accounts and "PLZ" accounts, etc., that is still a HUGE number of active members for a single website. I am so honored to be a part of this community, and would like to celebrate this success of almost reaching a quarter of a million users and a quarter of a billion pieces of art!

In celebration, I have posted some recent favorites I have found here. I hope you enjoy them.

Hello Everyone,

After a lot of work, a festival circuit including the Austin Film Festival and the Woodstock Film Festival, I have now posted the film online for all to see!

Take a look!

Please share it, so many deviants were a part of this film!

Also it is available on Vimeo!

EDIT:
:la: Over 4,000 points have been donated to the project! Thank you for your support!

:omg: Well.. Umm... that was quick  We reached the goal which means that I will be donating a minimum of 4,000 points! But keep this going so that we can keep getting the word out and get even more for the project!

Hello Everyone,

I did this a while back, but it's time to do it again. I have opened up a donation widget on my front page. I am inviting anyone who would like to participate, to please DONATE as many or as few points as you wish. All proceeds will be sent to =ToxicAlice92 for her Warm Winter Project.

But why donate to me first? Well let me explain.

Even though I don't like buying "inanimate" objects from online sites (like points), this is going to a REAL cause. As a result, I have a few bucks that I feel should go to someone who could use it more than I. =ToxicAlice92's project will help warm a huge number of people, and I want to give as much help as I can.

If by the end of November we can raise 2,000 or more points together, I will DOUBLE that amount (up to 2,000 :points:) and donate them all to =ToxicAlice92

So... Help reach this goal! Donate a few points on my front page!

Can't Donate?! That's OK! Fave this journal and share it with your friends! Help get the word out about this amazing project!

If you have a number of points you'd like to consider doubling as well, please contact me, I may be willing to raise this goal if we get to the 2,000 mark really quickly!

Thank you guys! Read all about the project here:

UPDATES CONT. - Warm Winter Project: 2012UPDATE 9 - As of Sunday, November 25, 2012, I WAS ABLE TO MEET AND PURCHASE MY DONATION GOAL OF 50 HOODIES thanks to deviantART's 30% off Black Friday sale as well as my 10% Premium Member Discount. Congratulations to us and thank you to everyone who helped out!
UPDATE 8 - As of Saturday, November 17, 2012, we are at 125,125 points, with only 34,875 points left to go! I was able to purchase 2,000 points a moment ago to put directly into the pool myself. My original intent was to get 8,000, but I ended up working less than I expected this week and was unable to, but as of my next paycheck (in two weeks), I will be able to purchase 8,000! That will leave us with 26,875. And after `TimberClipse's AWESOME point doubler, like the one that helped out and did so amazingly earlier in the year, that will be another 8,000, leaving us with only 18,875! And his doubler is already halfway full with much thanks to =rainylake for immediately putting 2,000 points in

Hello Everyone!

Tonight, my film, The Symbol of Peace, will screen at the Woodstock Film Festival as part of the Teen Shorts Program at 5:45pm! The screening has sold out! I am so excited to see the screening packed with so many people both that I know and that I don't know.

In addition, just this week I was featured by Erica Chase-Salerno, a writer for newspapers through Ulster Publishing, and I wanted to share that interview with you all here.

“Film and television play a part in so many people’s lives today, and have led the way for change in the past and will continue to do so in the future. I believe strongly that films make a huge difference in society… Films raise awareness of issues, sometimes through fiction and sometimes through non-fiction; but in both of these cases, they bring an important part to society’s future.” Vel’s own film, The Symbol of Peace, is a look at the power of the iconic peace symbol in people’s lives and the different ways in which it has impacted both individuals and society over the past 50 years.

Thank you all for your support, this is a huge day and I am so glad for all the support that this community has given me.

Hello Everyone!

So I turn 17 tomorrow, September 30! Yeah I'm excited! But the point of this journal is to take advantage of the inevitable increase in views my profile will get tomorrow...

I would like to direct all of your attention to =ToxicAlice92's Warm Winter Project 2012. The project currently stands at 115,418 out of 160,000 points needed or just under 75% completed! iPhone 5 First Impressions

Fri Sep 21, 2012, 11:31 AM
So... iT's here!!!

10:00am today my iphone 5 was delivered. Holy shit, it's impressive.

I was asked by a few people to write a first review, so figured that I should... Anyway:

Weight:
People have said it already, but there is a HUGE difference in weight. It is quite noticeable. It is still not a very lightweight device, but compared to other phones it is one of the lightest.

Display:
The display looks similar to the previous retina, not a huge bump there. The size though is nice! It's a lot easier to view calendar, messages, basically everything.

Service:
The thing that I noticed immediately is that WiFi is way faster. Loading the same page on both devices loaded MUCH faster on the 5 than the 4. I also live on a campus with VERY spotty 3G service, but amazingly THERE IS 4G SERVICE!? Umm... what!? Hey, I'm not going to complain, but that's something I am looking forward to!

Reflectivity:
So, there isn't a given number of how much less reflective the two screens are... but I was outside in the bright sun and tried it out. I would say the 5 reduces reflectivity by about 40% outdoors and 30% indoors. Outside you really don't see the reflections at all where as the 4 they are somewhat bothersome.

Speed:
The phone is faster, though not noticeably so. It simply doesn't lag. That's the major difference. So for those of you like me who run your phones until they crash... you'll like it. Everyone else probably won't notice it.

Build:
The home button WORKS! Like a lot a lot better! Like. HELL YES!
In addition the phone it self when you look at under normal light you'll notice the iPhone 4 screen is like a light black/gray, and... the iPhone 5 is straight black. A nice change as it simply looks nicer.

Camera setup and speed:
The camera on the iPhone 5 is WAY faster than the 4. When I take a picture at the same time the 5 is ready to take another in focus picture before the 4's shutter even reopens for the next picture.
The cameras when I compare the photos, the iPhone 4 isn't as high quality (duh), it is less in focus, and is darker. The photo is also a different color on the iPhone 5. MUCH closer to the actual colors.

Questions:
