The Dazzling Fair of the SlumsMarissa's mother didn't want her going to the fair. It wasn't because it was too far – Marissa was 14 now, after all – and it wasn't because it was unsafe – cops were at every corner at these kinds of events. It was because of the filthy androids who were allowed to go to the events on this side of town.
She had been raised by a family that was rather well-off – they were at least rich enough to have all the chores done by androids programmed specifically for that function. So Marissa's mother hadn't hated the androids when she was younger. In fact, she had heard rumors about children that had to do the chores themselves, and for that, she was grateful to the machines. But when her parents died and she blew all of her inheritance money, she ended up in the slums, and soon gave birth to a baby girl.
