The Symbol of Peace

`TimberClipse | @zevimages | Web | facebook | IMDb | Tumblr

Part of the Official Selection of:
Austin Film Festival, Woodstock Film Festival, Peace River Film Festiva, MovingMedia Film Festival

The Symbol of Peace, directed by Zev Vel, is a short documentary about the peace sign and has been screened at the Austin Film Festival, Woodstock FIlm Festival, MovingMedia Film Festival, and Peace River Film Festival.
Morning brings news of conflicts from every corner of the globe. In this troubled time, the peace sign is a comforting sight for many. On t-shirts or jewelry, bumper stickers or posters, it reminds us there is more to life beyond struggle and strife. The peace sign has survived for over 50 years because it is a symbol of hope and a philosophy uniting countless loving people. It has struggled to stay alive over the years as its popularity and acceptance have waxed and waned. But the strength it has now will keep it forever strong. Directed and filmed by Zev Vel, The Symbol of Peace will share the inspiring stories and dreams of the people who love the peace sign and have created their own peace signs to display on their homes and businesses. Here in Woodstock, New York, we are surrounded by the symbol; it is part of our daily landscape. It seems fitting for Woodstock to be the center of the documentary.

The Symbol of Peace features lots of art donated and submitted by artists on deviantART. I would like to extend a huge thank you to those artists.

The Symbol of Peace by `TimberClipse is a wonderful piece of film. A thought-provoking documentary on the power of one of the most iconic symbols in modern history. ( Suggested by Arichy and Featured by kingmancheng )

Hi! This is a critique from a #FeedbackFrenzy participant. :D First off, I'd like to say that I have no experience in making films so I can't comment to the technical behind-the-scene stuff. But I will give you some of my observation, and hopefully you'll find them somewhat helpful. (That said I'm in no position to criticize a DD feature anyway, but I have a few things to say.)

First off, do I even need to comment on the message? I salute to you for bringing this topic to us and sharing with us some of its details, history and meaning. I actually learned quite a bit from this short documentary. I had never known that the symbol came from the CND, and I had never even thought of looking up its origin. I've always taken the symbol for granted, and it's only until now that I've realized that there's so much to it. Thank you for teaching me and many others a thought provoking lesson.

Now, about the actual components of the film. I'll try to recollect my thoughts I had while watching it. First off, I really like the font you selected for the text. It is very rounded, a very subtle and thoughtful pairing with the rounded design of the peace symbol. Moreover, I enjoy how you timed the appearances of the text to the background music, though sometimes I felt like the text is slightly off-beat to the music, and can be synced a little better. (This is very minor though.) The music is very well selected. I like how it starts calm and gradually picks up the pace as to be coming much more grandiose toward the end. It gives the film a feel of a climax. Great job.

I also liked the progress of your story-telling. You go from illustrating the symbol itself, to its creation, its evolution, its recent uses and finally ending the film on a personal level. This is a nice format that comes around full circle, and each transition is done so subtly that the viewer doesn't feel a significant breakage in the flow of the film. Good work.

There are two technical things that I want to mention. First is that during certain scenes, there's a band of stretched image at the bottom of the frame, which is quite distracting. I don't know what causes it or how to fix it (because I don't know the technical details), but I'm sure you would know. It's worth looking into/watching out for in the future. (If, by any chance this problem is on my end, please let me know if there's anything I can do to avoid it. Though I find it peculiar that it only occurs on certain scenes but not others.) Secondly, some of the Skype interviews can be better in quality. Sometimes it's a bit hard to understand what they're saying, and the picture is rather grainy. I understand that this issue is perhaps difficult to resolve because of the distance between you and the interviewee, but perhaps it's worth considering putting in subtitles for some of the calls, so the viewer can more easily understand what is being said.

The last thing I want to say is about the film as a whole. I feel like the film is too long for he amount of content it has, and/or have not enough content for its length. Instead of shortening it, I suggest keeping its length, and adding more to it. For example, you glossed over whether the peace sign lost when it becomes associated with hippies and whatnot, and I feel like a lot more could be said about the development in the use of the symbol post-1960's and pre-2000's. It would be nice to hear about more opinions on that topic. In contrast, you laid out the origins of the symbol very well, everything from CND to the Vietnam war, etc.. I think the parts about the evolution of the symbol through the later decades should be as detailed as the part about its origin. Perhaps a good way to do this is to take out a few pictures to free up some time for more information.

And that concludes my very unprofessional thought and reflection on the film. All in all, it has a very powerful message and it's executed quite well. But of course, everything can be improved, and I hope my comments were at least somewhat illuminating. :)

Hello :)
I'm a participant of #FeedbackFrenzy contest 02 and i will share with you my thoughts and criticism.

You know ... I have to congrats you for sharing this theme with the whole deviantart community and web sites places because the term peace despite being the target of so many events on the planet continues to be something difficult to achieve is commendable and all this human effort.
The peace symbol itīs something really curious because I believe there are many people who wear t-shirts with the symbol or other adornment with it and know that only means peace because it was said to them but maybe not seek the reason of having this form, this aspect or its history.
when I was watching the video I remembered once being in a jewelery shop and my friend wanted to buy a necklace with the symbol and at that moment I wondered to myself, "Does she want to buy for its significance? or is it to be beautiful and be the trends of the moment? ... I never asked why because I think it is something that should be present within each one but I believe there are many people who maybe just use it "just to not look bad "or" buy "to feel good .... So i think that like it was in the vedeo there are diferents means of how to think about piece or how to help for having piece because all people think of different ways. It is not just having acquired an education because their culture did so. it is about how we think about what really affects us and how we make our decision because the human being have this ability. This is my own opinion :) i belive that there existe An infinite number of other opinions.
unfortunately we often think in peace because something violent or inhumane happened. So the visual form appears in the world in consequence of what happened and as a way to "prevent" new sufferings or bad actions.

Regarding to the visual impact of the vedeo i liked the passages have a natural effect in my opinion and the black background with white text because I think there is a large concentration that allows that time for its visual impact is accompanied by the feeling of the sentences. it was a moment of hear, see, feel and reflect. I really liked to know that different views from diferent people with diferent ages because Their notion is constantly progressing as maturity and life experiences. I think that when those phrases have emerged about the history of how, when was a moment of silence and and archive because time passes so quickly but what "once was" must always be present in our minds.

I really hope that more people use a little of their time to see this vedeo and once again thanks for the share :)
Continue with your personal projects because they are allowing us to move forward. :aww:

( if there are sometinh that you didnīt understand please let me know and i will try to express with other words)
